High intensity cognitive behavioural therapy is the most evidence-based and well researched psychotherapy available in the UK. This therapy is founded on fundamental beliefs that our thoughts, behaviours, emotions and sensations inform each other and can be a keystone in understanding and changing the experiences of an individial. Cognitive behavioural therapy has been shown to be highly effective in treating a number of psychological and emotional difficulties in a wide variety of individuals.

Listed below are some of the common difficuties that HI CBT can address as well as some information about how this might look.

If you would like more information or to discuss what you feel you might be struggling with, please book your free 20 minute consultation call.

Depression

Depression is more than feeling sad. It is a common mental health condition that can affect mood, energy, motivation, sleep and enjoyment of everyday life.

Symptoms may develop gradually or follow a difficult life event and can make even simple daily tasks feel overwhelming.

Anxiety

Generalised Anxiety Disorder involves persistent and excessive worry about everyday situations. People with GAD often find it difficult to control their worries, even when they recognise that the fears may be disproportionate.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

OCD involves unwanted intrusive thoughts, images or urges (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or mental rituals (compulsions) performed to reduce anxiety. These cycles can become exhausting and interfere with daily life.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

PTSD can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms may include re-living/flashbacks, distressing memories, nightmares, feeling constantly on edge and avoiding reminders of the trauma.

Social Anxiety

Social anxiety involves an intense fear of being judged, criticised or embarrassed in social situations. This can lead people to become preoccupied with other's thoughts and avoid conversations, meetings, presentations or social events despite wanting meaningful relationships.

Specific Phobias

A specific phobia is an intense fear of a particular object or situation, such as flying, spiders, injections or heights. The fear is often much greater than the actual risk and can significantly limit daily activities.

Body Dysmorphia

BDD involves persistent distress about perceived flaws in appearance that are often not noticeable to others. The condition can lead to excessive checking, dressing/ camouflage behaviours and significant emotional distress.

Health Anxiety

Health anxiety is characterised by excessive worry about becoming seriously ill, often despite medical reassurance. Individuals may repeatedly check their body/symptoms, seek reassurance or avoid health-related information.

Emotional Dysregulation

Emotional dysregulation refers to difficulties managing intense emotions. You may find that your feelings become overwhelming, last longer than expected, or lead to reactions that feel difficult to control. This can affect relationships, work, and overall wellbeing.

Interpersonal/Family Difficulties

Relationship difficulties with partners, family members, friends, or colleagues can have a significant impact on emotional wellbeing. Challenges such as conflict, communication difficulties, family tension, or repeated patterns in relationships can contribute to stress, anxiety, and low mood.

Low self-esteem

Low self-esteem involves persistent negative beliefs about yourself and your abilities. It can affect confidence, relationships, work and overall wellbeing, often contributing to anxiety and depression.

Stress

Stress is the body's natural response to pressure, but prolonged stress can begin to affect both physical and mental health.

Adjustment

Adjustment disorder occurs when someone experiences significant emotional or behavioural difficulties following a major life change or stressful event. This might include bereavement, relationship breakdown, illness, moving home, job changes, or becoming a parent. While these reactions are understandable, they can become overwhelming and interfere with everyday life.

Long Term Conditions

Living with a long-term physical health condition can have a significant impact on emotional wellbeing and day-to-day life. It's common to experience anxiety, low mood, frustration, or feelings of loss alongside managing ongoing symptoms.

While CBT does not treat the underlying medical condition itself, it can help you manage the psychological and behavioural challenges associated.

Burnout

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress, most commonly related to work or caring responsibilities. People experiencing burnout often feel drained, detached from their work or daily responsibilities, and struggle to maintain motivation or concentration.

Sleep Difficulties

Insomnia involves persistent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early despite having the opportunity to sleep. Poor sleep can affect mood, concentration, energy levels, and overall wellbeing.

Not Sure?

Not sure what you're struggling with?

You don't need to have a diagnosis before seeking support. Many people experience a mixture of anxiety, low mood, stress or emotional difficulties that don't fit neatly into one category. An initial assessment provides an opportunity to understand your experiences and discuss whether CBT is likely to be the right approach for you.
